what the fuck is a date?

I was laying in bed last night thinking about how many times I've been left looking stupid because a dude has asked me out and I've deluded myself into thinking it's a date. I don't know how to date, I'm terrible at it and obviously don't even fully understand the concept of what constitutes one. Do women and men really have that different an idea of what dating is?
